This destination is a home to one of the most significant concentrations of elephant, black rhinoceros, cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus and crocodile, birds amongst many other species. The reserve has high variety of habitats including Miombo woodlands, open grasslands, riverine forests and swamps.  Large part of the wooded grasslands of the northern Selous are occasionally flooded by the rising water of Rufiji River, creating a dynamic ecosystem.
